Sturtevant: Double Trouble
November 9, 2014–February 22, 2015

Sturtevant (American, 1924–2014) began “repeating” the works of her contemporaries in 1964, using some of the most iconic artworks of her generation as a source and catalyst for the exploration of originality, authorship, and the interior structures of art and image culture.

The show’s design was inspired by the catalogue to Andy Warhol’s iconic 1968 Moderna Museet show and Sturtevant’s 2004 painting Black Marilyn. The black-on-black design also alludes to the artist’s self-effacement and the unseen mechanics of power structures.

Designed at The Museum of Modern Art, and organized by Peter Eleey with Ingrid Langston

Creative Direction: H.Y. Ingrid Chou; Design: Damien Saatdjian; Production: Claire Corey, Tom Black, Paulette Giguere; Typefaces: Bodoni, Akkurat
